What is Augmented Soft Tissue Mobilization?

Augmented Soft Tissue Mobilization, known as ASTYM™, is a treatment approach used to help the body break down scar tissue when it becomes a problem. Scar tissue is the body’s natural healing response to an irritation or injury, but it is sometimes laid down in overabundance or in a disorganized fashion. This dysfunctional type of scar tissue can limit motion and cause pain.

With ASTYM™, the clinician uses ergonomically designed tools to stimulate the resorption of the dysfunctional scar tissue and appropriate stretches to assure proper remodeling of the new tissue.

Problems that respond well to ASTYM™ include:

  • tennis elbow
  • golfer’s elbow
  • trigger finger
  • heel pain and plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Post-surgical scarring
  • carpal tunnel syndrome

ASTYM™ is provided only by certified physical or occupational therapists who have undergone intensive training including lab instruction, written testing, and practical testing. Certification is available only through Performance

Dynamics ® Inc., the researcher and developers of the system. The Performance Dynamics ® Inc. Network provides on-going research, education and outcome collection/analysis for it’s ASTYM™ clinicians.
